A Few Social Networks You May Have Missed

When someone says “social media” Facebook immediately springs to mind. With over 800 million active users, they are certainly leading the pack in social networking. Twitter is also gaining inroads as including “tweets” become common in news broadcasting. Tech giant Google also launched it's platform entitled Google+ to try to break into this space. In an age of increasingly short attention spans and consumers looking for the next best thing, what other networks might challenge Facebook in the future?

Make Your Own Show With Google+ Hangouts

After initially chalking Google+ up to yet another social network, this time with larger pictures, I decided to give it another chance now that it has officially gone public (it was only Beta for a while). Now that there are more people with accounts, it is fast becoming one of my favorite social networks – but for a very unique reason: The Hangout.

Hangouts are a built in feature to Google+ that let you have a video chat with up to ten people at once. I initially dismissed this as a quick tool to connect friends from long distances, like Skype but with multiple parties. The technology works surprisingly well, Google auto detects who is speaking, and makes their face the larger of the ten while that person is speaking. You can choose to have a hangout with your friends, or you can open up to the public from the world over. That’s where the fun begins.

Welcome!

Thanks for stopping by the blog section of the site. I plan to blog about whats new in video and photography as well as reviewing new technology as it emerges.

I am using mostly state of the art "combo cams" to produce our video, as it allows the best of both worlds. Having been trained as a photojournalist, using this type of camera comes naturally to me, and allows me to work quickly and get a varied amount of shots in a short period of time, which is ideal....

The leader in these cameras is the Canon 5DmkII, which has absolutely stunning video quality, and has been embraced by the film community as well, and we are starting to see TV ads being shot with this camera.

Fast on the heels of the 5DmkII is the super cute Panasonic GH1 which is so in demand right now (largely because it is the only combo-cam to date that can autofocus while shooting) that is very hard to get a hold of in Canada and the US.

Its an exciting time in the photo/video world because convergence is finally here NOW. Video guys are shooting billboards, and photographers are starting to learn video editing skills to shoot web videos and commercial spots.
